In the 12th Century the monks of Byland Abbey built a large Grange at Ramsgill. The remains of their chapel can be seen behind the east end of the present church which was built in 1842. From a seat in the churchyard there are lovely views over Gouthwaite Reservoir with its fascinating bird life. St Mary the Virgin is a small rural church which celebrates a 9am Holy Communion service according to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.

Whilst visiting St Mary’s why not visit How Stean Gorge, Lofthouse? Whether for the scrumptious café or to explore the steep-sided chasm with natural caves it’s worth a visit. Or visit the Methodist Chapel in Wath village. It is architecturally unique having five sides each of different lengths.
